Colosseum Announced

ColosseumIt’s a bit off-topic, but we couldn’t help mentioning that the website for Days of Wonder’s new game Colosseum has gone live.

From the press release: In Colosseum each player is a Roman impresario—producing great spectacles in his or her arena in the hopes of attracting the most spectators. Players earn wealth and glory for each event run, using it to create ever more ambitious events. They will need to improve their arena, find the best performers, lure the Emperor and his nobles, and manage assets for long-term success to be granted the title of Grand Impresario … Days of Wonder has designed Colosseum to provide the timeless feel of a German style board game.

At the new Colosseum site you can read this press release in full and download an interview with the game’s designers, Markus Lübke and Wolfgang Kramer.

BattleLore Rules Summary Translations

Rules SummaryMy BattleLore Rules Summary has been translated into French and German thanks to the efforts of some hard-working BattleLoreMaster supporters.

Go to the Downloads section of the Guild to find the French translation by Yannick Le Guédart and the German version by Markus Fabian.

Thanks guys! If you’d like to volunteer to translate the Summary into another language, contact Universal Head on the email address at the bottom of this page.

Mark Kaufmann Interview

Mark Kaufmann, Vice President of Marketing for Days of Wonder, discusses the company and BattleLore in a new interview with Matt and Todd from Short Attention Gamer. Listen to the interview here. Note his comments on ‘collectibility’ in the games industry which I personally totally agree with!

Also, in the first week of February a new game from DoW (non-BattleLore) will be announced.

Guild Gallery Update

Check out The Guild Gallery for a great more excellent figure painting work by Dan Becker—this time it’s medium and light infantry.

Official Word: Creature Compendium Online

CreatureThe official DoW blog has just announced that the Creature Compendium is online!

The Compendium follows the format of the Lore Card Compendium and acts as a repository of FAQs, examples and house rules for creatures in BattleLore.

At the moment the Compendium features a ‘How To Use It’ entry, a ‘Design Notes’ entry with some thoughts about the role of Creatures in BattleLore, a ‘Generic Creature’ entry that answers questions about the use of creatures in general; and specific entries for the Giant Spider and the two promotional miniatures, Hill Giant and Earth Elemental.

Official Word: New Dice, New Adventures

It’s been a while since we saw anything on the official blog, but the latest post packs a double punch.

Firstly, replacement dice are now available as promised for those of you who have noticed wear on your set. You can get them here. These are the same dice as those in the box but with more permanent screen printing. DoW may produce more deluxe-quality dice in the future (possibly even metal dice).

They only ask that you request replacement dice only if you really need them, as DoW is replacing and shipping these at their own expense.

AdventureSecondly, and more enjoyably, there are seven new official adventures online!

The first four (#11a-14a) are Lore adventures where the Free Companies of Seguin of Badefol fight the troops of Sir Arnold of Cervolles. A month later, Seguin’s forces confront the army of Jacques of Bourbon at the Lore version of the Battle of Brignais (#15a), complete with a Hill Giant!

The remaining two are Medieval adventures: the Historical Battle of Brignais (somewhat confusingly, also #15a), and the Battle of Lewes (#16) opposing Simon V of Montfort to King Henry III of England, fought 100 years earlier.

The next post will feature the long-awaited Creature Compendium.

BattleLore VASSAL Engine

I’ve been remiss in not mentioning that VASSAL, the free program that lets you play boardgames in real-time with other players over the internet, has released a BattleLore module.

So if you just can’t wait on face-to-face to get your BattleLore hit, download the VASSAL engine and the BattleLore module now and start playing!

BattleLore Rules Summary

Rules SummaryThis 2-page rules summary is designed to make it easy to check rules during the game or give players a quick refresher without having to go through the rulebook.

For best results, print in colour on double-sided card, laminate and cut out.
