BattleLore Rules & Reference Pack Version 3

I’ve finally finished updating my rules summaries and reference sheets for BattleLore, and this time I’ve put them all together into one download: the BattleLore Rules & Reference Pack. This comprehensive PDF document summarises in compact, easy-to-reference form all the BattleLore rules currently available. If you wish, you’ll never have to use the reference cards again.

You’ll find a host of similar rules summaries and reference sheets for many popular games at Universal Head’s blog site, Headless Hollow, on the Freebies: Boardgame Reference Sheets page.

The Pack lives on the Guild Downloads page, but you can download it direct from here: BattleLore Rules & Reference Pack v3.3: PDF (2Mb)

If you find any errors or have any suggestions for improvement, please let me know.

I must apologise in advance, but I won’t be helping to make or host translations of this file—unfortunately, it’s just too time consuming to provide the original art files, check the layout etc. This latest version will be hosted here in English only, though you can still download the translations that have been done by dedicated fans in the past.

Update: v3.1 has a corrected Terrain Reference page.
Update: v3.2 has a corrected Troll powers section.
Update: v3.3 has corrections to Hills, Cliffs, Bridge and Earth Elemental.

Two Downloadable Unit Upgrades for BattleLore

FFGIt’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Fantasy Flight concerning BattleLore, so hopefully these two tidbits are the precursor to some new announcements.

Advanced Training: Field your armies with boosted Dwarven Cattle Riders and the improved Goblin Sling ammunition designed by BattleLore creator, Richard Borg! Commanders can print out the following altered cards that take the place of the existing cards of the same name.

You can download the new unit cards here.

Campaign Rules: Fan Expansion

BattleLore fan Chris Lewis has put an amazing amount of work into this set of Campaign rules, new races and new creatures for BattleLore. In this one zip file you’ll find all of his home brew rules and ideas, including:

  • Rules for campaigns in the world of BattleLore that can be run in a night, a weekend, or a much longer period, and the maps you’ll need to run them.
  • Terrain deployment cards to allow random battlefields (169 combinations).
  • Details on 14 new races, 15 creatures (including cannons) and 6 Wyverns along with counters to use them on the battle board.

This has all been put together into a ZIPPED file you can download here (1.9 Mb). Check it out!

Thanks Chris for all the hard work you’ve put into this excellent contribution!

The Siege of Juvage: Fan Fiction & Adventure

Siege of Juvage“A loud crash drowned the cries of the citizenry as another boulder hit the castle wall. The ground shook, and small pebbles from the ceiling gave off a glassy sound as they hit the marble floor. The aging scribe sat anxiously at his desk in the castle library. He was sweating heavily as he awaited Count Gervase. Some of the shelves had toppled over, and the floor was now littered with books and random debris from the broken decorations that had once adorned this elegant hall. Dawn had broken, and the small city of Juvage awoke to the sound of crashing boulders.”

It’s wonderful to see how some BattleLore fans have been inspired by the game to create their own game variants, adventures and background.

Jorge Molinari has not only created a great adventure with Deliver the Message, but he has written an excellent piece of fiction to accompany it, The Siege of Juvage.

This has all been put together into a PDF document you can download here (772 Kb). Read the story, then play the adventure for yourself!

Thanks Jorge for all the hard work you’ve put into this excellent contribution!

The BattleLore Compendiums: April ‘08

Things may be a little quiet out there on the BattleLore front lately, but still the improbably dedicated Gerald Uitz keeps us all up to date with his beautiful Compendiums. The April editions of the Lore Cards Compendiums and the Creatures Compendiums are now online.

For these editions, it’s time to do a full new print-out, because Gerald has, with the approval of Days of Wonder, rewritten the titles on most of the pages to make finding your answers even easier. As of the next release you can then go back to just printing and replacing the revised index and pages with new entries.

As usual, go to the Guild Downloads section for the latest downloads.

Replacement Call to Arms cards available

The card backs on the first edition Call to Arms cards did not match the backs of the Specialist Card decks that were later released. While this does not affect game play, for those who would like a visual match Days of Wonder have printed replacement decks of the 10 Call to Arms cards with the correct matching card backs and are offering a free replacement program.

Get the cards here.

The BattleLore Creatures Compendium: October ‘07 edition

The formidable Gerald Uitz brings us the October ‘07 editions of his Creatures Compendium.

Like the Lore Cards Compendium, the document has been redesigned for even greater ease of use. It contain several sections, each with its own pagination. The sections are designed as individual sub documents, each with a separate page count. Each page number contains the section ID and a page counter in the format x.y.

This means that for each new revision you need only print and replace the revised index and pages with new entries without messing up the overall document structure.

The BattleLore Lore Cards Compendium: October ‘07 edition

The dedicated Gerald Uitz brings us the October ‘07 editions of his Lore Cards Compendium.

In response to concerns about the usage of paper and ink, Gerald has made a few changes this month. The new documents contain five sections, each with its own pagination. Section 1 contains the introduction and index with roman page numbers. Sections 2-5 are reserved for the 4 Lore Masters. They are designed as individual sub documents, each with a separate page count. Each page number contains the lore card ID and a page counter in the format x.y. So, the Rogues Deja Vu would have page number 3.1. If there is more one page under that card, the next page would be 3.2.

This means, that for each new revision you need only print and replace the revised index and pages with new entries without messing up the overall document structure.

The Ultimate BattleLore Rules Summaries and Reference Sheets

Reference SheetSince the last versions of the Universal Head BattleLore rules summaries and reference sheets we’ve seen quite a few additions and clarifications to the BattleLore rules.

Now at last you can download these definitive sheets safe in the knowledge that you are completely up-to-date.

Firstly, the BattleLore Rules Summary is at version 2. Not only have the first two pages (the core rules), been carefully checked and revised, but the next two pages provide you with a handy summary of the Epic rules, and the final page a summary of the Call to Arms rules.

Then, the very useful BattleLore Rules Reference has been updated to version 8. This includes all the new terrain, weapons and unit types from the specialist packs and expansions, all carefully presented on a single double-sided sheet.

Many thanks go to ColtsFan76, the tireless BattleLore fan some of you may know from the official forums, whose proofreading and suggestions have been invaluable in the making of these updates.

As usual, for best results, print out in colour on double-sided matt card, cut out and laminate.

Enjoy! Go to the Guild Downloads section for the downloads. Translated versions will be posted as soon as possible.

Update: The Reference has been updated to v8.1 with the correction of some small cosmetic errors.

Adventure Army Lists

Here’s a handy little Excel spreadsheet I whipped up to keep track of how many and which type of units are used in each scenario, so I could paint units in the most efficient order possible. The spreadsheet lists the number used of each type of unit in every official scenario published: the first ten from the core game, the first batch of six published online, and the recently published five Epic games. Download it now.

Update: Small correction made to file.

Creature deployment controversy resolved!

From the DoW forums: “Your Giant Spider from the core game and the two promotional creature figures, the Hill Giant and Earth Elemental are all considered 1 level creatures. To deploy a creature in battle will count as 1 level token for its camp on the War Council. For your enjoyment, you may deploy any one of these when an Adventure calls for the deployment of a creature.”

Small Adventure Errata

From the DoW forums: “… please note that Adventure #9 has a misprint. There should only be one goblin archer unit in the woods, in the 3rd hex from the left of the map. The goblin archer unit next to it (in the 4th hex from the left) is an error, and should be a green goblin infantry unit, not an archer unit. The Online version of this adventure will feature the correct units, and be posted along with the Adventure Online editor, as soon as it becomes available.”
