End of an Era

Greetings BattleLore fans.

After four years in operation, I’m deciding to officially close down the BattleLoreMaster website. It seems all I’ve been doing for a while now is repeating information already on the Fantasy Flight Games site.

Back in the old days when the game was first released, there was a huge buzz from the original publisher, and a lot of excitement about the future of BattleLore. They were very supportive of this site, and at one time there was even the possibility of getting the job of writing a background sourcebook for the game, and a bright future for the character of The Raven. Unfortunately, all that was not to be.

I’m sure FFG will continue to support the game and release the occasional expansion, but there’s really no longer any incentive for me to keep updating this site, let alone expand it.

For the moment, I’ll be keeping the forums open and the site how it is online, but unless there are some huge changes in the BattleLore world I won’t be updating it.

Thanks for coming along for the ride BattleLore fans; it was fun to create this site and be part of the excitement around the original release. A special thankyou to those who contributed content. BattleLore is of course still a fantastic game and will always be a valued part of my game collection, and I look forward to seeing what FFG will do with it.

The Raven sends his regards as well. He is on some dark mission in a land of shadow, no doubt risking life and limb for pay. I’m sure we will hear rumors of his exploits again one day.

For all future information, see Fantasy Flight Games.

Painted Heavy Infantry

I’ve finally began painting my own BattleLore figures and, in keeping with the old maxim of starting with the easiest task, began with the heavy infantry.

These figures were first washed with water and a bit of detergent, allowed to dry, and undercoated white. I started with the metal areas, painting them with Games Workshop Chainmail, washing them with Tamiya Smoke, and highlighting with Mithril Silver…

(… visit the Guild Gallery for more details and some close-up photos.)

Forum membership approval back up and running

Those of you who registered on the forums over the past few days should be approved now (except you &#%$ spammers)—sorry for the wait. Things are again running as normal. And … Happy New Year to all readers!

Quick note about the forums

Just a quick note about the forums—they’ll be no acceptance of new members for the next four days while I’m on a break (forum membership approval has to be done by hand to stop spammers). The forums are still working fine but those who wish to join during this time will have to wait until the end of the week to be approved. My apologies.

Unofficial Adventures Updates

Check out the Unofficial Adventures section for three new unofficial BattleLore adventures by fans. The first is the Battle of Jemmingen, 21 July 1568 by Servando Miguel, set during the Eighty Year’s War. A great excuse to break out the Hill Giant and Earth Elemental.

The second is the first of what will probably be many Lord of the Rings-style adventures: Battles Of The Fords Of Isen I : Defending The Eyot by Stephane Nolet, which sets Théodred defending a river-encircled eyot (small island) against Uruk-hai, wargs and Dunlendings.

The third is To the Rescue! by Niels Taatgen. Town commander Francois du Pont attempts to rescue the Major from a band of unruly Goblins … but they have a Hill Giant …

in your adventures now!

The New BattleLoreMaster

Allow me to introduce the new BattleLoreMaster!. I hope you like the new site, which features more graphics, a wider format, and new sections, all designed to enhance your games of BattleLore. Of special note is the new Guild section, which will feature player-made modifications for the game—home rules, new weapons, armies, terrain and creatures (and look out for wallpapers soon). This section needs your input to grow, so send in your ideas now! There’s also an Adventures section where you can submit your Adventures for all BattleLore players to enjoy. And of course there’s the Forums, where a great community of players is developing—116 members and counting.

Many thanks go to the folks at Days of Wonder for being so supportive.

Taking a break from the battle

Over the next two weeks if you don’t see any updates here on BattleloreMaster.com, don’t panic! I’m having a holiday far from computers, websites and email (but not from games, I’ll pack a few small two-players in the bag). As always, you’ll still be able to keep up with the latest at the official official DoW blog.

Don’t forget us here though! I’ll be back at the end of October and will immediately catch up on all the news I’ve missed, and then we’ll be heading into the final few weeks before the big release.

If anyone is going to Essen in October and would like to write up an on-the-spot report about BattleLore, perhaps with photographs, please contact me at the end of October (there’s a email link at the bottom of the page).

Of course, the BattleLoreMaster forums will still be up and running over this period. See you in two weeks for much more BattleLore!

Universal Head, your webmaster.

The Forums Are Open!

Yes folks, the BattleLoreMaster forums are now open for membership. Discuss the new BattleLore system with like minded gamers, ask rules questions, discuss figure painting techniques or the fantasy and historical background of the game—or just find gamers in your area.

Please be a bit patient while I fine tune the look of the forums over time. Also, to minimise the inevitable spam registrations, I will be approving registrations manually - so if you can’t get on the board to start posting right away, it just means I haven’t got around to approving your membership yet (probably because—since I’m in Australia—it’s the middle of the night!)

Welcome to the BattleLore army! Go join up …

Welcome to BattleLoreMaster.com!

New games are being released all the time. But occasionally, very occasionally, you hear about something that just gives you a feeling. A feeling that this game is going to be big.

I had that feeling when I heard today that Days of Wonder, the game company known worldwide for high quality, highly successful games such as Memoir ‘44 and Ticket to Ride, had announced a new mass fantasy combat system called BattleLore by renowned Memoir ‘44 designer Richard Borg. So much so that I immediately felt impelled to register this domain and set up this site.

Here at BattleLoreMaster.com I’ll be gathering together everything I can find to do with BattleLore. It looks like BattleLore is going to be something that is going to be around for quite some time. We’ve just begun here and things may be a little rough as we design and develop the site depending on what Days of Wonder has in store for us. So bookmark the site and come back regularly as we discover and explore the world of BattleLore together!

Enjoy, Universal Head
